When to walk
< title

The Three Capes Walk can be walked at any time of the year. The closeness of the sea ensures a maritime climate with more moderate temperatures in comparison to other parts of Tasmania. Summer daytime maximum temperatures average 16-19°C and winter ones 10-12°C.

Reasons on when to go can be different, but some of these may help you decide.

Spring (Sep – Nov):
– coastal heath in flower
– migrating whales.

Summer (Dec – Feb):
Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race
– summer music and food/wine festivals including the Falls Festival, MONA FOMA and Taste of Tasmania.

Autumn (Mar – May):
– migrating whales
– short-tailed shearwaters annual migration
– orchids flowering.

Winter (Jun – Aug):
– night skies
– acacia trees in bloom
– winter swells crashing into towering cliffs
– winter music
– food/wine festivals including the Festival of Voices and Dark MOFO.

How long do I need to prepare?

Don’t feel the need to rush and just get the track ‘done’. The preparation for the journey can add to the whole experience. Give yourself enough time to build your fitness, prepare your meals, test out your gear and get experience walking in different conditions.

If you have not done many overnight walks before, give yourself time to get out and walk, test out you pack, boots and other gear. If you are not an experienced walker, you will probably want 6 months to build up the fitness, equipment and experience.

You will also need to think through saving the money you will need for the track, gear, supplies, travel and accommodation. There are other boring practical things like working out holiday leave and when your friends are keen to walk.
